From James Cameron (director of Titanic) comes a tale about aliens, race, obligation, and goddamn White supremacy. Presented in both 3D and non-3D formats, Avatar is a multi-hundred million dollar production. In essence, it’s an expensive film with grand graphics and bad plot. It’s like watching Pocahontas all over again, just with different colored people. Seriously? Is this a rehash of how imperialism for the younger generation?
I have a love-hate relationship with this film. Yes, the CGI and effects were good, particularly the somewhat breath-taking 3D effect. However, the plot is filled with cliches and conveniences. Why these creatures are blue in a green forest, I don’t know. Why do their plants and animals waste energy in glowing and growing unnecessary appendages, I don’t know. How combining human DNA and alien DNA can yield a viable creature, and one that looks just like the rest of them, I don’t know either. And lighting matches and burning stuff in alien air? You get the drift; the list goes on.
As an action film with big machines, yeah, this movie rocks. As an alien lifeform alternate universe film, it just doesn’t hit the spot. We’re better off watching Planet of the Apes or something.
The movie didn’t feel that long even though it is pretty long at 161 minutes (thereabout). I guess that’s the charm of an entertaining action flick. It’s certainly not one of those movies you feel tempted to check the time midway; so if you have time and $10 ($14 on weekends) to spare, go catch Avatar in 3D even if it’s JUST for the 3D effect.
