Pig out at New York New York

‘Nuff said.

Deep-fried assorted mushrooms, $6.90 (?)

This appetizer was such a disappointment I am finding it hard to express it duely in words. The mushrooms were so drenched in oil; it lacks the light fluff and crunch you get from Japanese tempura so this is pure bad.

Mo' Mushroom Quesadilla, $9.90

This other mushroom dish is, conversely, nice. The mushroom is juicy and slightly chewy. Coupled with the cheese, the quesadilla is quite nice. I think this alone can make quite a nice light (or not) lunch. My only gripe? Not enough filling. I would love more filling.

Spiced pork ribs, $7.90 (?)

Ever since watching an episode of Man Vs Food on TV where Adam went to Honolulu, Hawaii and had fried air-dried pork ribs, I’ve been wanting to try something similar. This spiced dried pork ribs sounded promising. However after tasting it, even though it’s not hard and dry like some other ribs you get in Singapore, it’s not a must-eat. It’s a very average dish to be honest. Average taste, average presentation, average dip. There’s nothing about this that pushes the boundary and lands itself as above average.

Hot plate beef fajita, $24.90

The hot plate fajita is the highlight of the meal. I didn’t get a picture, but the fajita comes with tortilla wraps, shredded lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, avocado and some kind of tomato-based sauce. For those who don’t know, fajita (pronounced fah-hee-tah), is a grilled meat on capsicum and to be served on tortilla (tor-tee-yah) wraps with other condiments. You basically put a bit of everything on the wrap, roll it up and eat it. It’s a messy dish, but it’s real tasty. I like Tex-Mex food, so I’m happy New York New York serves this sort of food, apartĀ  from just burgers and typical Western fare. The beef looks a little rare on the inside, but it continues to cook on the hot plate so those, like me, who like their beef deader than dead, can wait a little, and those who like their beef just dead can dig in. I particularly like this dish because I’m a big fan of capsicum, something I acquired only in the past one or two years.

All in all, I will only return to New York New York for the fajitas, and possibly if a friend is taking part in the Yankee Burger competition. I’d love to witness someone wolfing down an 8-inch burger in an hour. :)
