Sleepless Town

I was invited to the gala night of Sleepless Town (through family relations) by Toy Factory. As usual, saw familiar faces there, SAT NEXT TO a familiar face I don’t want to name and didn’t want to acknowledge (because I have never read his works).

Anyway, I’m not a fan of musicals. And I never will be, especially after this show. I was asked to be nice when blogging (then again who will read this), I just can’t. It was that bad. Let’s just say I’ve never wanted to leave halfway through a performance, but I nearly wanted to bolt during the intermission today, but to be polite, I stayed on.

What was bad about this show? You might think I’m biased because I don’t like musicals. Nah-ah, I am completely objective about this. What was good about the show except for seeing IvyChanPohChoo being a demoness and that good voice from the kid that is totally wasted on this musical. I really, really want to know what’s with Beatrice Chia-Richmond and her fascination with UNNECESSARY rape scenes. The scene is not crucial to the plot, if there was one in the first place. What they had were pieces of cliche recycled plot bunnies sewn together in a bad fashion and passed off as a storyline. Seriously, who are you fooling?

Let’s count the cliches shall we – a raping step-father-ish character, a gay superhero who’s in the closet, villians wasting time playing with their prey at the final moment, the heroine sacrificing herself for the greater good … can we get any worse? And to top it off we need bad references to pop culture, bad jokes and vulgar actions that do nothing to propel the plot-ish thing. Even the Social Work play was much better than this! Then again, I shouldn’t pitch them together, it’s an insult to the Social Work folks really.

Toy Factory should just stick with their Chinese stuff that has infinitely more substance than this, really.

Hey you are fast. Didn’t expect yr comments so fast. The singing and dancing is ok but the storyline is weak. Well, the audience enjoy the jokes they cracked.
