Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives

Have you wondered if the afterlife exists? If it does, is it all fluffy and white? What is afterlife like?

This book answers these questions.

Somewhat.

With a wee bit of artistic license.

Frankly, this is an immensely enjoyable and thought-provoking book. The author, David Eagleman, a neurologist and writer, describes afterlife in different ways. He asks mildly philosophical question, for example, could we already be living in an afterlife? That afterlife is just a different existence from a presupposed previouslife. He also asks questions of human existence – could we be highly intelligent robotic spies sent from outer galaxies, or god, to collect research data on Earth?

The author asks questions, paints a possible picture of alternate realities, dabbles with the existence of god (one theory is that god is not the creator, but since we attribute creation to him he accepts the role), debate what a wholesome life can entail, deconstruct humans as intelligent beings …

I really enjoyed this book. My only complaint – it’s a little short. At about 100+ pages on my e-reader (not sure how that converts to paper), I finished it fairly quickly. But I think this can be one of those books I can re-read over and over again. I highly recommend this book if you’re into alternate realities and an occasional chuckle over religions matters.
